چکیده

This paper describes the features required of OWL to realise and enhance Indigenous Knowledge (IK) digital repositories. Several needs for Indigenous Knowledge management systems (IKMSs) are articulated, based on extensive stakeholder input, and analysed on the suitability of semantic web technologies in addressing them. Based on their potential for impact and maturity, several possible applications are recommended for further investigation and inclusion into current or new IKMSs, including: ontology based querying and browsing; a natural language independent ontology for multilingual data access; support for collaborative knowledge generation; and the formalisation of IK for scientific discovery. For each of these possible applications, the required OWL features are discussed, which include representation of vagueness, mereotopology, modularisation, and extended support for internationalisation and annotation.

Boundary Work: Engaging Knowledge Systems in Co-management of Feral Animals on Indigenous Lands

The integration and use of Indigenous knowledge to inform contemporary environmental policy decisions and management solutions is a growing global phenomenon. However, there is little critical inquiry about how the interactions between scientific and Indigenous knowledge (IK) systems can be effectively negotiated for the joint management of socialecological systems. Such issues are urgent on In...

Indigenous Knowledge, Science, and Resilience: What Have We Learned from a Decade of International Literature on “Integration”?

Despite the increasing trend worldwide of integrating indigenous and scientific knowledge in natural resource management, there has been little stock-taking of literature on lessons learned from bringing indigenous knowledge and science together and the implications for maintaining and building social-ecological system resilience. In this paper we investigate: (1) themes, questions, or problems...

LUBM: A benchmark for OWL knowledge base systems

We describe our method for benchmarking Semantic Web knowledge base systems with respect to use in large OWL applications. We present the Lehigh University Benchmark (LUBM) as an example of how to design such benchmarks. The LUBM features an on-tology for the university domain, synthetic OWL data scalable to an arbitrary size, fourteen extensional queries representing a variety of properties, a...

A Broker for OWL-S Web services

Brokers are widely used in distributed information systems such as Multi-agent systems and distributed databases. Yet, there has not been a detailed analysis of Brokers’ architecture and no general solution has been proposed on how the Brokers’ tasks have to be accomplished. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of these tasks, and an implementation based on OWL-S. We show that while OW...
